Travel Advice on trips to Mexico
The foreign office is advising against all non essential travel to Mexico. ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) is saying that if you have booked with any of its members and are due to travel imminently, the tour operators may be cancelling your holiday.
If the package is cancelled by the tour operator, then you may be offered a suitable alternative if they can provide one or a full refund under the Package Travel Regulations.
However, if you have insurance in place then you will be able to
rely on the insurance policy as the Foreign Office is advising
against travel. If you have booked a package holiday but have no
insurance, then strictly speaking there is nothing to stop you from
getting insurance after you have booked. However, in practice you
may find that there are no insurance companies that are willing to
insure you. This is a commercial decision for the insurers and you
cannot force the insurance company to take on the risk.
Alternatively you may find that the premiums and excess have gone
up for travel in areas where cases of swine flu have been confirmed
and again they would be within their rights to do so.
This advice only applies at this time. There will be people
worried about holidays in July for example and they will need to be
patient and see what the Foreign Office advice is nearer the
time.
